Statement from the ANU Myanmar Research Centre on the 2021 Military Coup

The 1 February 2021 military coup is a big blow to hopes for political and social change in Myanmar. As academic specialists, post-doctoral fellows, research students and professional staff working on Myanmar at The Australian National University (ANU), we regret that the country’s military has again seized government.

The last decade has brought us many opportunities to collaborate with counterparts in Myanmar. We have established strong working relations with colleagues in universities there, and in many emerging civil society organisations.

To our friends and associates, and to ANU alumni in Myanmar, we extend our solidarity. We are concerned for the safety of all, and support a better future for Myanmar. We look forward to the release of all detained political leaders and activists, and to the restoration of civilian rule.
