
Nicola Williams
As a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University's Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs. Dr. Nicola Williams is working on [/research] a series of papers and a thesis-to-book project titled How Civil Wars End: The Influence of Rebel Groups. She has received numerous awards and grants for research and other projects. Nicola’s research interests include war outcomes, peacemaking, rebel groups, and power-sharing governance systems. Nicola is a published mixed-methods researcher. Her work combines quantitative and qualitative methods, including large-N observational studies, process tracing, and elite interviews. She has experience conducting field research in South and Southeast Asia, including in rebel-held territories, as well as managing research teams, databases, and research projects from inception to publication dissemination.
Nicola’s professional experience, spanning 16 years, includes working as a peacebuilding practitioner in conflict-affected countries. She has worked for The Asia Foundation (TAF), the United Nations Development Programme, the Danish Refugee Council/Demining Group, and other organisations. Her on-the-ground experience includes working on peace negotiations, peacebuilding, violence reduction, strengthening civil society, and governance transitions. She has deep Myanmar expertise and experience across Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Nicola’s practitioner experience uniquely informs her research.
